How to use it

  1. Enter your number in international format, starting with the country code — for example +34 600 000 000. Spaces and dashes are removed for you.
  2. Optionally write the message that will appear in the customer’s text box, such as “Hi, I’d like to book a table”.
  3. Scan the preview with your own phone. You should see a chat with your business opening, with the message ready to send.
  4. Download the code and add a short caption so people know it opens WhatsApp.

How the link works

The code contains a wa.me link — WhatsApp’s official “click to chat” address. The number must be in full international form without the plus sign, leading zeros, spaces or brackets, and the message is URL-encoded. The generator takes care of both.

Example: booking message

Scanning opens a chat with +34 600 000 000 and the text “Hi! I’d like to book a table for two.” The customer can edit it before sending.

Encoded content

https://wa.me/34600000000?text=Hi!%20I'd%20like%20to%20book%20a%20table%20for%20two.

Because it is an ordinary web link, it also works on computers: scanning with a laptop webcam or opening the link offers WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.

Getting the number right

The most common mistake is the national format. In many countries numbers are written with a leading 0 (“0612 345 678”), but WhatsApp links need the country code instead (“+31 612 345 678”). If you type a number starting with 0 without a country code, the generator warns you.

Use the number that actually has WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business installed. A landline can work if it is registered with WhatsApp Business.

Pre-filled messages that get replies

A good pre-filled message tells you where the customer came from and what they want, so you can answer quickly:

  • Shop window: “Hi! Is the item in the window still available?”
  • Restaurant table: “Hello, I’m at table __ and have a question.”
  • Flyer: “Hi, I saw your flyer about the summer course.”
  • Delivery box: “Hi, I have a question about my order.”

Keep it short: long messages make the code denser. Emoji work but add bytes; one is plenty.

Your number stays on your device

The code is built in your browser and your number is not uploaded or stored by us. Remember, though, that anyone who scans a printed code can see the number — use a business number rather than a personal one for public signs. See also the SMS QR code if your customers don’t all use WhatsApp.

Tips

  • Test with a phone that isn’t yours, so you see exactly what a customer sees.
  • Add your opening hours next to the code so people know when to expect a reply.
  • Use WhatsApp Business to set an automatic greeting for out-of-hours messages.
  • Write “WhatsApp” on the sign. The code itself doesn’t say what app it opens.

Questions

Does the customer need to save my number first?

No. The wa.me link opens the chat directly, without adding you to their contacts.

Does it work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. The link opens whichever WhatsApp account is registered to that number.

Can I change the message later?

The message is inside the code, so a new message means a new code. Customers can always edit the text before sending, though.

Can I link to a WhatsApp group?

Yes — copy the group’s invite link from WhatsApp (Group info → Invite via link) and use the link generator. Anyone with the code can join, so share it carefully.
