4 modules

The spec asks for 4 modules of empty space around the code.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the details you want to share. A name or a company is required; everything else is optional.
  2. Add your mobile number with the country code so it works for international contacts.
  3. Keep an eye on the version in the preview: every field makes the code denser. On a business card, fewer fields means a smaller code.
  4. Scan to check that your phone shows a “Create contact” or “Add to contacts” option, then download for print.

An offline contact card

Unlike a link to an online profile, a vCard code contains the details themselves, in the standard vCard 3.0 format that iPhone, Android and Outlook all understand. The person scanning doesn’t need an internet connection, and the details can’t disappear if a website goes down.

Example: what the code contains

Commas, semicolons and line breaks inside your text are escaped automatically, so a company name like “Smith, Jones & Co.” is saved exactly as typed.

Size: the trade-off of a vCard

The example above produces a version 9 or 10 code — around 55 modules across — which is much denser than a short link. On an 85 × 55 mm business card, plan on at least 2.5–3 cm for a full card. If space is tight, you have two good options:

  • Share fewer fields — name, mobile and email cover most needs.
  • Use a link code to an online contact page, which stays small whatever the page contains.

The size advice is in the legibility chart above; our business card guide covers layout too.

International names and addresses

Accents and non-Latin scripts (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic…) are stored as UTF-8 and display correctly on current iPhone and Android contact apps. Write phone numbers with a + and country code, and put the country in the address so contacts abroad can use it in maps.

Tips

  • Use a work email and number you’re happy to have saved permanently in other people’s phones.
  • Print a caption like “Scan to save my contact”.
  • Choose error correction M for cards; higher levels make an already dense code bigger.
  • Export SVG for the print shop so the fine modules stay crisp.

Questions

What’s the difference between vCard and MeCard?

Both store contact details. MeCard is shorter but supports fewer fields and is less consistent across devices. We use vCard 3.0 because iPhone, Android and Outlook read it reliably.

Can I add a photo?

A photo would make the code far too large to scan. Put your photo on a web page and add the address in the Website field instead.

Can I update the details later?

The details live inside the code, so changes mean a new code. That’s the price of working offline.

Is my contact information stored anywhere?

No. It is processed in your browser and isn’t uploaded or kept by us.
