How to use it

  1. Type an address or place name, or switch to coordinates for an exact spot such as a side entrance or a field gate.
  2. Choose the app: Google Maps links work on iPhone and Android (in the app or the browser). Apple Maps links suit iPhone-heavy audiences.
  3. Choose what happens: show the place or start directions from wherever the person is.
  4. Scan to check the pin lands where you expect, then download.

Which link format to choose

Google Maps links use Google’s documented Maps URLs (google.com/maps/search/?api=1 and /maps/dir/?api=1). They open the Google Maps app if installed, or the website otherwise, so they are the most universal option.

Apple Maps links open Apple Maps on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and a web map elsewhere. geo: links (RFC 5870) open whatever map app an Android phone uses and work offline-first apps, but iPhone cameras may show them as plain text — use them only for Android-only settings.

Example: directions to a square

Scanning starts directions to Plaça de la Reina, Valencia from the person’s current location. The address is URL-encoded so accents survive.

Address or coordinates?

An address is easy to read and lets the map show your business name if it is listed. Coordinates are better when the address isn’t precise enough: rural venues, large campuses, festival entrances, parking areas or a delivery bay around the back.

To get coordinates, long-press the spot in Google Maps and copy the two numbers (latitude first). Both comma and dot decimals are accepted.

Ideas

  • Wedding and event invitations: “Directions to the venue”.
  • Holiday rentals: a code for the parking spot and one for the key box.
  • Flyers and posters for shops that are hard to find.
  • Hotel reception: codes for nearby pharmacies, beaches or stations.

Tips

  • Check the pin on a phone before printing — geocoding an address can land on the wrong building.
  • Use “Start directions” for invitations and signs; “Show the place” for business listings.
  • Write the address too, for people who prefer their own navigation app.

Questions

Does this work without the Google Maps app?

Yes. Google Maps links open in the browser when the app isn’t installed.

Can I point to my Google Business listing?

Type your business name and town as the place, or copy the share link from Google Maps and use the link generator.

Is the location tracked?

No. The code contains only the destination. The map app uses the scanner’s location on their own device for directions.
