The QR code quiet zone: why the empty margin matters

The quiet zone is the clear space around a QR symbol. It separates the finder pattern from nearby text, lines, borders and images.

How much margin?

The QR specification calls for a quiet zone at least four modules wide on each side. A module is one small square in the code, so the physical margin grows with the module size.

The margin should use a uniform background that contrasts with the code. Keep page decorations and captions outside it.

Common ways it gets lost

A design crop can cut off the outside modules. A colored frame can touch the symbol, or a layout can treat the visible pattern as the full footprint and leave no room for its border.

Some readers can decode a code with a smaller margin in ideal conditions. That does not make the design robust across cameras and print settings.

Add it back

Use a QR export that includes margin or place a clear, unprinted border around the symbol. Measure the margin in module widths rather than guessing in pixels.

In short: Reserve four clear modules on every side when placing a code in print.
